Nominee Profile: Spirit Airlines

The Company:
Celebrating its 13th year, South Florida-based Spirit Airlines is the largest privately-held airline in the United States. Spirit currently serves 14 markets in the United States and Caribbean with 100+ daily flight departures.

Spirit Airlines started out in 1980 as Charter One, a Detroit-based charter tour operator providing travel packages to entertainment destinations such as Atlantic City, Las Vegas and the Bahamas. Ten years later, Charter One began scheduled service from Boston and Providence, R.I. to Atlantic City. On May 29, 1992 Charter One brought jet equipment into the fleet, changed its name to Spirit Airlines and inaugurated scheduled service from Detroit to Atlantic City.

Spirit now brings low fares and friendly service to Atlantic City, N.J., Chicago/O’Hare, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Myrtle Beach, S.C., New York/LaGuardia, San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Tampa and seasonal service to West Palm Beach. Spirit’s website is www.spiritair.com.

On Why They Have Entered The American Business Awards:
"The success of our ‘Day of Freedom to Travel’ program was the result of an immense amount of support by each and every employee of Spirit Airlines," said Tom Anderson, Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer of Spirit Airlines. "Cooperative efforts by all departments played a key role from planning through implementation of this unprecedented program. On September 11, 2002 hundreds of Spirit employees, many of whom who came in on their day off, joined executives to hand out American flags and personally greet every Spirit passenger on every flight in every market.

"We wanted to thank the American public for expressing their freedom to fly, for taking a stand against terrorism and for their continued support of Spirit Airlines.

"The American Business Awards offer an opportunity for businesses to be recognized for their creative efforts and represent a level of achievement that every company should strive for. Winning a Stevie would be an acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication shown by the entire Spirit Airlines family not only during our ‘Day of Freedom to Travel’ program but each and every day."
